I Quit My Glucosamine Pills. Here Are 7 Reasons I Started Again, in a Gummy.

The pills were the size of my thumb. The gummy has the same 1,500 mg.

A man's hand holding two green Flexa gummies next to a tipped bottle of big capsules

I'm 63. I still do my own yard, I still get up the ladder to clear the gutters, and I still drive two hours to watch my grandson play ball on Saturdays. I'd like to keep doing all three for a long time.

A few years ago I bought a big bottle of glucosamine like everyone does. I lasted about five weeks. Not because I decided it wasn't working. Because every morning there were three capsules the size of my thumb waiting on the counter, and one day I just stopped.

This spring I started again. Here's what I learned, in the order I learned it.

Before the 7 reasons

The one thing about cartilage nobody told me

Cartilage soaks up nutrients slowly, like a sponge

Cartilage, the cushioning in your joints, has no blood supply of its own. Most of your body gets fed through blood vessels. Cartilage doesn't. It takes in nutrients slowly, from the fluid around it.

That one fact changes how you shop. It means a joint supplement isn't something you feel in an afternoon. It's something you take every single day, for months. Every reason below comes back to that.

What I compared before I started again

Check your own label against this.

CheckFlexa gummiesTypical glucosamine capsules
Glucosamine 1,500 mg Often 1,500 mg
Chondroitin + MSM 800 mg + 1,000 mg Sometimes
Turmeric + reishi & maitake Yes, up to 99× absorption* Rarely
Vitamin D3 + calcium Yes Rarely
How you take it 2 gummies 2–3 large capsules
Every amount on the label Yes, no blend Usually

Typical products vary by brand. This compares categories, not named products. Flexa amounts are per 2-gummy serving. *Manufacturer's testing vs turmeric alone; results may vary in the body.

1

Glucosamine wasn't the problem. Quitting it was.

A man's hand pushing a bottle of big capsules to the back of a cupboard

Taking glucosamine was a reasonable idea. It's been part of joint routines for decades. Where I went wrong was the pill.

When I talked to other men my age, it was the same story. Big capsules, two or three times a day, and somewhere around week five the bottle ends up at the back of the cupboard. Because cartilage is fed slowly, quitting at week five means you never really gave it a chance.

Nobody tells you that the hardest part of a joint supplement isn't choosing one. It's still taking it in March. If a product only works when you take it every day, then how easy it is to take every day isn't a detail. It's the main thing.

So if I was going to start again, the first question wasn't which brand. It was: what would I actually keep taking?

2

Glucosamine on its own was only part of the job, not the whole of it.

Three glass dishes of white powders and crystals
Glucosamine 1,500 mg · Chondroitin 800 mg · MSM 1,000 mg

The bottle I quit was glucosamine and not much else. The more I read, the clearer it got that joint supplements are usually judged on three things together: glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM.

If you've tried glucosamine by itself and shrugged, that's worth knowing. It wasn't necessarily the wrong idea. It was a third of the idea.

Chondroitin and glucosamine are both natural parts of cartilage, which is why they're so often taken together. MSM is a source of sulphur, and it's been part of joint formulas for years. You'll find all three in most serious joint products. The bottle I'd bought just didn't bother.

So I went looking for one that had all three, at amounts that actually mean something.

3

Flexa has the real amounts, and every one is printed on the label.

Each 2-gummy serving: glucosamine 1,500 mg, chondroitin 800 mg, MSM 1,000 mg

Two Flexa gummies give you 1,500 mg glucosamine, 800 mg chondroitin and 1,000 mg MSM. Those are the numbers I was looking for, and they're on the label in plain sight.

1,500 mg is also the glucosamine amount used in the NIH-funded GAIT study. To be straight with you, that study's overall results were mixed, and I'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.

No proprietary blend, either. A blend lets a company list an ingredient without telling you how much is in there. I don't buy those anymore.

Which left two things the bottle I'd quit never had: turmeric, and anything for the bones.

Nodding along to two or more of these?

  • You've bought glucosamine before and stopped
  • Big capsules are a chore to swallow
  • You'd rather take one thing than three or four
  • You want to keep doing the yard, the stairs, the Saturday drive

Then keep reading. Reasons 4 to 7 are the ones that got me to start again.

It pairs turmeric with two mushrooms, and covers the bones as well.

A golden stream flowing from turmeric and reishi into the cartilage of a knee joint
Turmeric + reishi · Up to 99× absorption* · D3 + calcium for the bones

Most joint gummies give you turmeric on its own. Most joint pills give you glucosamine on its own. Flexa puts 200 mg turmeric extract alongside two functional mushrooms, reishi and maitake, in the same two gummies as the glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM.

The pairing is there for a reason. Turmeric on its own is notoriously hard for the body to absorb. In testing at Zerean's manufacturer, turmeric paired with reishi showed up to 99× the absorption of turmeric alone.*

It's an East-meets-West idea. Turmeric supports the body's natural response to physical stress. Reishi is an adaptogenic mushroom, and maitake is a beta-glucan-rich mushroom traditionally used for immune balance. I hadn't seen that combination in a joint product before.

*Based on testing by Zerean's manufacturer comparing turmeric with reishi against turmeric alone. Results may vary in the body. Individual results vary.

Then it adds vitamin D3 (2,000 IU) and calcium, which contribute to the maintenance of normal bones. At my age I'd rather take one thing that covers the joints and the bones than buy a second bottle and forget that one too.

Good on paper. The real test was whether I'd keep taking it.

Two green apple gummies are easier to keep up than a handful of capsules.

Three big capsules every day versus two green apple Flexa gummies

This is the whole reason I started again. Two gummies, with breakfast, tasting like a green apple sweet. No glass of water to wash down a tablet. No fishy aftertaste.

My wife now takes them too. The jar lives next to the coffee, and neither of us has missed a morning in two months.

I know some people think a gummy has to be weaker than a capsule. Look at the label: it's the same 1,500 mg of glucosamine I was trying to swallow before, plus chondroitin and MSM. The format changed. The amounts didn't.

Which brings me to how I decided it was worth the money.

“They taste delicious and the texture is great too. I'm very happy with my purchase.”

One jar does the job of three bottles.

A clutter of supplement bottles and capsules next to one jar of Zerean Flexa
Five bottles → one jar, 2 gummies a day

Buy glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM separately and you're paying for three bottles and taking a small handful of capsules every morning. Add vitamin D and calcium and it's five.

Flexa is one jar and two gummies. Fewer bottles to buy, fewer to run out of, and far fewer to remember.

Before I bought, though, I ran it through the checklist I now use for any joint supplement.

Checklist

The checklist I now use for any joint supplement

Take it to any brand. If it can't tick all four, keep looking.

  • ✓ Glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM, not glucosamine alone
  • ✓ Real amounts printed on the label (1,500 / 800 / 1,000 mg)
  • ✓ No proprietary blend hiding the amounts
  • ✓ A format you'll still be taking in 90 days

Flexa ticked all four. That's why I started again.

The Early Bird price is capped at 100 orders a day, and 90 days is the honest test.

Right now Flexa's Black Friday Early Bird price is $39.99 a bottle with Subscribe & Save (the regular one-time price is $64.99), with free shipping, limited to 100 orders a day. When today's are gone, it reopens tomorrow.

The subscription suits this anyway. Cartilage is fed slowly, so the bottle running out in week five is the most common way people quit. You can skip, pause or cancel anytime.

My advice is to plan on 90 days. Cartilage is fed slowly, so give it time and judge it at three months, not three weeks.

Questions people ask first

I already tried glucosamine. Why would this be different?

Flexa isn't glucosamine on its own. It's glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM at real amounts, plus turmeric paired with reishi and maitake, and D3 and calcium for the bones, in a gummy you'll actually keep taking. See reasons 2 to 4.

Can I take it with my medication?

Take the bottle to your doctor or pharmacist and ask before you start, especially if you take any regular medication.

How long before I notice anything?

Plan on 90 days, because cartilage is fed slowly. Make it a daily habit first, then judge it at three months.

Is the Early Bird price a subscription?

Yes. The $39.99 Early Bird price is with Subscribe & Save. It renews automatically until you cancel, and you can skip, pause or cancel anytime from your account. Each renewal is $39.99, every 30 days.

What if it's not for me?

Your first order has 30 days from delivery for a return. Email support@zereanlabs.com with your order number, email address and full name. Shipping costs aren't refunded, and return postage is paid by the customer.
